Top 7 Exercises by Physiotherapy After Knee Surgery

Most patients experience immediate benefits from surgery. Your orthopedic surgeon and physiotherapist Paschim Vihar will give you an exercise program. The more actively you participate, the faster your recovery will be. Your rehabilitation program is designed to meet your individual needs.

1. Walking

The best way to heal your knee is to walk properly. At first, you will walk with crutches. Your surgeon or therapist will tell you how much weight to put on your leg.

Stand comfortably upright with an even weight. Walker or crutches. Use a walker or crutches to walk a short distance; then move the leg with surgery forward and extend the knee so that the heel touches the ground first. When walking, bend your knees and ankles and place your entire foot evenly on the ground. Your toes will lift off the ground, and your knees and hips will bend so that you can take the next step forward. Remember to tap the heel first, then step on it with your foot, and then lift your toes off the ground.

2. Stair Climbing and Descending

Climbing up and down stairs requires strength and flexibility. At first, you need armrests for support, and you can only climb one stair at a time. Always keep your knee strong when going up and down stairs. Even with a surgical knee. Remember, there are “good guys” and “bad guys”. You may need someone to help you until you regain your full strength and mobility.

Climbing stairs is an excellent exercise for strength and endurance. Don’t try to climb stairs higher than the standard height (7 inches), and always use the handrails. As you become stronger and more agile, you can climb stairs with your feet.

3. Assisted Knee Bends

Lying on your back, place a folded towel on your operated knee and drape the towel over your foot. Bend your knee and apply gentle pressure on the towel to increase the bend. Hold for five to ten seconds. Repeat several times until tired

4. Exercycling

Exercise cycling is a great activity that can help you regain muscle strength and knee mobility. First, adjust the seat height so that the bottom of your foot can easily touch the pedal and your knee is almost straight. Pedal backwards first. When it is possible to cycle backwards comfortably, move forward. As you get stronger (in about four to six weeks), gradually increase the pressure on the exercise bike. Start cycling for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day, gradually increasing to 20 to 30 minutes, three or four times a week.

5. Assisted Knee Bends

Lying on your back, place a folded towel on your knee and drape the towel over your foot. Bend your knee and apply gentle pressure to the towel to increase the bend. Hold for five to ten seconds. Repeat several times until tired.

6. Seated Knee Bends Without Support

Sitting beside a bed or on a chair with your thigh supported, bend your knee as much as you can until your foot is on the floor. With your foot lightly on the floor, slide your upper body forward on the chair to increase your knee bend. Stay in this position for 5 to 10 seconds. Straighten your knee completely.

Repeat this several times until your leg feels tired or you can no longer fully bend your knee.

7. Seated Knee Bends with Support

Sitting beside the bed or on a chair with your thigh supported, place your foot behind the heel of your operated knee for support. Slowly bend your knee as much as you can. Hold your knee in this position for 5 to 10 seconds.

Repeat this several times until your leg feels tired or you can no longer fully bend your knee.
