Chiropractors, like other holistic health practitioners, look at the entire body when treating you. If a joint is misaligned or damaged, the smooth functioning of the body can be disrupted, leading to inflammation, pressure on nerves, and resulting medical problems. Chiropractors know that stress, poor posture and accidents, including sports injuries and auto accidents, can all prevent the body from functioning properly. Almost any aspect of health can be adversely affected by problems in the spine.
For example, pressure on nerves connected to the stomach may cause certain digestive disorders. Chiropractic manipulation at the point of these nerves exiting the spinal cord through the vertebrae can correct such disorders. What happens during chiropractic treatment? Your first session with a chiropractor often involves an assessment of the posture and mobility of the joints. The chiropractor may also ask you to bend over, lift your legs, test your reflexes, take your blood pressure or take an x-ray to create a more detailed picture of the problem. Like osteopathy, chiropractors try to detect limited or excessive joint movement, especially in the spine because these problems cause inflammation, swelling and pressure that lead to pain and disease.
A chiropractor may use some massage to loosen stiff muscles before performing manipulation techniques. Manipulation usually involves a sharp, precise thrusting movement to adjust the joint. Some chiropractors avoid thrusting movements and instead rely on more gentle movements and stretches.
Chiropractic will provide effective long-term management of a condition. Patients usually return for regular “maintenance” treatments to prevent them from relapsing.
What problems can chiropractic help?
Chiropractors focus primarily on back problems, but they also treat other conditions.
Where’s the evidence?
There have been numerous clinical trials of chiropractic, many of which have been reported by the well-regarded British Medical Journal published by the British Medical Association. Research reports have shown that chiropractic works better in treating acute back pain than standard treatments given in hospital outpatients.
What is a subluxation?
Medical subluxation is an incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint. Dislocation of any joint will usually require chiropractic treatment to help reposition the joint. Spinal subluxation is relatively rare, but can sometimes impinge on spinal nerve roots causing symptoms in the areas served by those roots.
Can chiropractors treat subluxations?
Chiropractors talk about vertebral subluxation and have their own unique definition of this problem; they say that it is relatively common and is evident as a spinal vertebra loses its proper connection or alignment with one or both of its neighbours. This obviously interferes with the nervous system. Traditional chiropractic treatment treats vertebral subluxation using manipulation techniques.
